PRIME MINISTER

Kronenburg has had the function of prime minister only since 1981. Before that, the king himself chaired the government meetings of the Oostkamer. In his absence, the Oostkamer was chaired by the vice-president of the Oostkamer, who was a government minister as well; in most governments, it was the minister of domestic affairs that acted as vice-president, but in some governments another minister was appointed. The constitution change of 1981 made the vice-president prime minister; the function of the head of state turned more ceremonially and excluded from that point on chairing the Oostkamer.
