BREDENBURG

Bredenburg is a new municipality that was separated from Alexanderstad territory in 2016. It consists of the former north-eastern part of Alexanderstad, which is located on the North Island and borders Groningen. The name 'Bredenburg' refers to one of the first settlements in Kronenburg. It was founded in the late 16th century by Luppo Breden but in the early 17th century, the settlement was destroyed by fire and never rebuilt. The area was swallowed by the expansion of Alexanderstad in the 50s of the 20th century and until the revival of Bredenburg as a separate municipality in 2016, only the Bredenburg Park reminded of the former village.
