About Adzhatia

The State of Adzhatia is a democratic republic on the island of Valya in the Barents Sea, north of Russia (Kola peninsula) and north east of Norway. Originally the island was solely inhabited by a Finno-Ugric people close to Finns and Karelians, but during and after the second world war almost the entire people of the Adzhatians were transported to the island, where they mingled with the indigenous inhabitants. In 1950 Valya became known as the Adzhatian Autonomous Socialistic Soviet Republic. In 1990 and 1991 Adzhatia became independent, but it was only after 2004-2006 that the country became more democratic. Most Adzhatians favour the idea of their country becoming a member of the EU and NATO, but this seems unlikely to happen any time soon.
