WHAT IS THE AGL?

'AGL' is the Dutch abbreviation for League of Geofictional Nations. It is an international organisation of mostly impartial countries on earth that don't exist in reality. It was created in 1986 by some members of the Dutch Geofiction Association. Since then, many nations have left the AGL, while others joined. At present, the AGL has ten full-fledged member states: Cilogia, Kronenburg, Insulantis, Issel, Chimor, Īle de Romanhe, Marckonia, Palana, Voskia, and the Channel Islands. The kingdoms of Cilogia and Marckonia are the only founding member states left.

There are three important institutions within the AGL. The first is the Conference; the biannual meeting of delegations of the member states. The Conference speaks about matters concerning the execution of tasks and obligations such as described in article 12 of the Treaty of Aralethe - the founding treaty of the AGL.
The second institution is the Secretariat, the executive committee of the AGL, based in the Cilogian capital of Prisce. The Secretariat is chaired by the Secretary General who is appointed by the Conference for a four year term (he or she may be reappointed twice). The current Secretary General is the former prime minister of Marckonia Heidi Ankerskjöld. She has been in office since 6 September 2012.
The third institution is the AGL High Court of Justice, based in the Cilogian city of Jarjana. The AGL High Court is only recognised by member states that have signed and ratified the Treaty of Jarjana, concerning the rights of individuals in the countries that recognise the treaty.

The AGL has a number of sub organisations: the AEGU (based in It Ton, Issel) is the economic organisation of the AGL. Then there is EnerGeo (based in Ultruneum, Insulantis), an institution that stimulates the peaceful use of (alternative) energy. The Monoghan Institute for the Environment (M.I.E., based in Divis, Voskia) observes and gives advise on the environmental conditions in the member states. The Centre of Cultural Cooperation 'Jan Ylieen' (based in Waterburg, Kronenburg) aims to enhance the cultural cooperation between the member states. Since 2011, the AGL also has the AGL Investment Bank (based in Marckfontänn, Marckonia).

The AGL organises some cultural and sportive events on a regular basis. First, there is the Cultural Capital of the AGL; this title is appointed every year to a city in one of the AGL member states. In 2016 the Cultural Capital is Besnej, a city in Palana. Every four years AGL-Games are held between the member states; the last edition of this event took place in 2015 in Langheul (Issel). And finally there are the AGL Soccer Championships, organised every four years as well. The 2009 edition took place in Kronenburg; in 2013 they were organised in Īle de Romanhe. The 2017 edition will take place on the Channel Islands.

Member states of the AGL

The Kingdom of Cilogia is located in the Atlantic Ocean, southwest of Ireland. The country is larger than the Netherlands, has more than 11 million inhabitants (80% of whom are catholics) and is therefore the most densely populated Western European country outside of the EU. The Cilogian language is related to the Basque language. Queen Arna-Lotta has been the Cilogian head of state since 1987. Cilogia was one of the founding members of the AGL on March 2nd, 1986.

Kronenburg is a small kingdom between Long Island, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In the 16th and 17th centuries the islands were colonised mostly by people from the northern parts of the Netherlands (Friesland and Groningen); the country became independent in 1627. Kronenburg's head of state is king Ernst I Frederik (since 2010). The country has been a full-fledged member state of the AGL since July 31st, 1999, after one year of association.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire a bunch of Romans travelled around the world to find some place to continue to live according to their values. They settled on several islands in the Indian Ocean and founded the empire of Insulantis. The imperial throne has been vacant since the death of the last emperor Alexandrus XI in 2008; his son was not allowed to succeed him before he turned 21 in 2012, but he has yet to accept the crown. Insulantis has been a member of the AGL since April 11th, 2009.

Issel is a kingdom in the North Sea with a long tradition of beers. Head of state is king Hirn-Jan IV (since 1987). The country has a tradition of reservedness towards international cooperation. Recently this attitude has been increasingly criticised within the country itself and its application for the membership of the AGL - Issel is a member since September 13th, 2009 - can therefore be seen as a careful orchestrated step in the direction of the international community.

Chimor is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, close to Peru and Chili. The country is a republic with an ataxunistic basis (a kind of pragmatic socialism), while its name derives from the Chimu, a highly developped culture that originated in Peru but fled for the Incas. Chimor has been independent from Spain since 1980. Its present head of state is president Marķa Morillo Vargas (since 2010). Chimor has been a member of the AGL since September 13th, 2009.

Īle de Romanhe is a republic in the Indian Ocean, some 1500 km northwest of the Kerguelen. It is an isolated, thinly populated and mountainous country with a cold and windy climate. It became independent from France in 1982. Since then, the country has known turbulent times, but seems to have become more stable in recent years. Aristide Faroz-Zaran has been its president since 2009. Īle de Romanhe has been a member of the AGL since September 13th, 2009.

Marckonia is a kingdom in the Baltic Sea, bordering Estonia and Latvia. The country was one of the AGL founding members on March 2nd, 1986, but temporarily left the league between 2004 and 2009. Marckonia has played a difficult role between the West and the East during the Cold War, but the country became a EU-member state in 1995. Since 2007, Marckonia's king is Henrik-Otkar II.

The People's Republic of Palana is a country in the Pacific Ocean south east of the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka and north east of Japan. It gained independence from Russia on 25 March 1917, first as a presidential republic, but after the second world war (which saw Palana occupied by Japan and subsequently liberated by the USSR), the country became a communist people's republic. The present regime tries to apply a controlled socialist market economy after Chinese example.
Voskia is a republic in southern Europe, bordering the Italian region of Calabria by land as well as Albania and Greece and the Italian region of Apulia by sea and centred around a deep passage between the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea. In history the country was mostly part of other realms, most importantly the Kingdom of Two Sicilies and subsequently the Kingdom of Italy, until it became an independent nation in 1946. The country's current president is Başkim Arhali (since 2014).
The Marquessate of the Channel Islands is an archipelago in the English Channel, located between the islands of Jersey, Guernsey and the coast of Normandy. Until 1999 they were an autonomous territory of the British Crown, but then they became part of a personal union with the other Channel Islands. In 2009, this union was ended and the country became fully independent. Head of state is the Marquess of Hearst. The capital is Port Meryton.
