WHAT IS
THE AGL?
'AGL'
is the Dutch abbreviation for League of Geofictional Nations. It is
an international organization of mostly impartial countries on earth
that don't exist in reality. It was created in 1986 by some members
of the
Dutch Geofiction Association.
Since then, many nations have left the AGL, while others joined. At
present the AGL has nine full-fledged member states: Cilogia, the Mii
Isles, Kronenburg, Norland, Insulantis, Issel, Chimor, Īle de
Romanhe and Karstonia. The
kingdoms of Cilogia and Karstonia are the only fouding member states left.
There
are three important institutions within the AGL. The first is the
Conference; the biannual meeting of delegations of the member
states. The Conference speaks about matters concerning the execution
of tasks and obligations such as described in article 12 of the
Treaty of Aralethe - the founding treaty of the AGL.
The second institution is the Secretariate, the executive
committee of the AGL, based in the Cilogian capital of Prisce. The
Secretariate is chaired by the Secretary General who is appointed by
the Conference for a four year term (he or she may be reappointed
twice). The present Secretary General is the former vice-president
of Norland Karen Damgaard. She was appointed on February
23rd, 2008.
The third institution is the AGL High Court of Justice, based
in the Cilogian city of Jarjana. The AGL High Court is only
recognized by member states that have signed and ratified the Treaty
of Jarjana, concerning the rights of individuals in the countries
that recognize the treaty.
The AGL
has a number of suborganizations too: the AEGU (based in
It Ton, Issel) is the economic organization of the
AGL. Then there is EnerGeo (based in Ultruneum,
Insulantis), an institution that stimulates the peaceful use of
(alternative) energy. The Monoghan Institute for the Environment
(M.I.E., based in Turangi, the Mii-Isles) observes and gives advise
on the environmental conditions in the member states. The Centre
of Cultural Cooperation 'Jan Ylieen' (based in Waterburg,
Kronenburg) aims to enhance the cultural cooperation between the
member states.
The AGL
organizes some cultural and sportive events on a regular basis.
First, there is the Cultural Capital of the AGL; this title
is appointed every year to a city in one of the AGL member states.
In 2010 the Cultural Capital will be El Centro, a city in Chimor. Every four years AGL-Games are held between
the member states; the last edition of this event took place in 2007
in Middelhjem (Norland). And finally there are the AGL Soccer
Championships, organized every four years as well. The 2009
edition took place in Kronenburg.

Member states of the AGL |

The Kingdom of
Cilogia is located in the Atlantic Ocean,
southwest of Ireland. The country is larger than the
Netherlands, has more than 11 million inhabitants (80%
of whom are catholics) and is therefore the most densely
populated Western European country outside of the EU.
The Cilogian language is related to the Basque language.
Queen Arna-Lotta has been the Cilogian head of state
since 1987. Cilogia was one of the founding members of
the AGL on March 2nd, 1986. |

The Mii-Isles
are a kingdom between Australia and New-Zealand. Three
of its nine islands are inhabited. The Mii-Isles are an
independent nation since they left the Commonwealth in
1961. The two main languages on the islands are English
and Maori. Since October 2000 the country's head of
state is the young king Mii XIII. The Mii-Isles joined
the AGL as an associated member on September 27th, 1992,
becoming full-fledged member on April 16th, 1994.

Kronenburg
is a small kingdom between Long Island, Rhode Island and
Massachusetts. In the 16th and 17th centuries the
islands were colonized mostly by people from the
northern parts of the Netherlands (Friesland and
Groningen); the country became independent in 1627.
Kronenburg's head of state is king Alexander IV (since
1991). The country has been a full-fledged member state
of the AGL since July 31st, 1999, after one year of
association. |

Norland is a
republic in the Atlantic Ocean, near Argentina and
Uruguay. The archipelago was discovered in 1739 by
Jean-Baptiste Lozier Bouvet and subsequently colonized
by Danes, Norwegians and Englishmen. Norland has been
independent since 1921. Since 2004 the country's
president is Christian Eckhof. Norland became an
associated member state of the AGL in 2002 and after
that a full-fledged member on January 5th, 2003. |
 |
After the
collapse of the Roman Empire a bunch of Romans travelled
around the world to find some place to continue to live
according to their values. They settled on several
islands in the Indian Ocean and founded the empire of
Insulantis. The imperial throne has been vacant since
the death of the last emperor Alexandrus XI in 2008; his
son may not succeed him before he turns 21 in 2012.
Insulantis has been a member of the AGL
since April 11th, 2009. |
 |
Issel is
a kingdom in the North Sea with a long tradition of
beers. Head of state is king Hirn-Jan IV (since 1987).
The country has a tradition of reservedness towards
international cooperation. Recently this attitude has
been increasingly criticized within the country itself
and its application for the membership of the AGL -
Issel is a member since September 13th, 2009 - can
therefore be seen as a careful orchestrated step in the
direction of the international community. |
 |
Chimor is
an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, close to Peru and
Chili. The country is a republic with an ataxunistic
basis (a kind of pragmatic socialism), while its name
derives from the Chimu, a highly developped culture that
originated in Peru but fled for the Incas. Chimor has
been independent from Spain since 1980. Its present head
of state is president Rosita Varela Nergaard (since
2007). Chimor has been a member of the AGL
since September 13th, 2009. |
 |
Īle de Romanhe
is a republic in the Indian Ocean, some 1500 km
northwest of the Kerguelen. It is an isolated, thinly
populated and mountainous country with a cold and windy
climate. It became independent from France in 1982.
Since then, the country has known turbulent times, but
seems to have become more stable in recent years.
Guillaume Keztil Surt is its president since 2005. Īle
de Romanhe has been a member of the AGL
since September 13th, 2009. |
 |
Karstonia
is a kingdom in the Baltic Sea, bordering Estonia and
Latvia. The country was one of the AGL founding members
on March 2nd, 1986, but temporarily left the league
between 2004 and 2009. Karstonia has played a difficult
role between the West and the East during the Cold War,
but the country became a EU-member state in 1995. Since
2007, Karstonia's king is Henrik-Otkar II. |
